They are created, manufactured and distributed for military use only. Manuals issued to divers and other military personnel often include references to Rolex watches that are part of the standard issue for these military personnel. Today, people are willing to pay good sums to have a piece of this history.
A 1972 edition of the Military Watch Manual BR 2806, known as the "Divers Bible", mentions Rolex. According to Section 3334 of this book, divers are issued a Rolex as part of their standard equipment. Divers are reminded to check all watches "before and after use" for potentially dangerous broken glass. However, since these watches are rated for at least 200 meters, few divers will ever encounter this problem.
The Rolex Milsub was used by both "clearance" divers who engaged in shallow, attack-type diving as well as deep-sea and mine-hunting divers.
The History Of The Rolex Military Submariner
Reference 5517 is for submarines ordered for the military and not available to the public for sale. Today, the 5517 is the most sought after Rolex due to its rarity.
However, the Holy Grail of Rolex military submarine watches is the 5513. This watch was specially designed for the Royal Navy in the 1970s. According to conventional wisdom, around 1200 watches were made, but unfortunately most of them have not survived in their original form.
5513 was made especially for the Navy and supplied to divers in 1976. The watch has solid rods mounted on a nylon strap so that divers can attach it to a swimboard (a rectangular device for measuring depth and a compass). Navy divers used swimboards for basic navigational purposes, especially when swimming underwater to plant mines or attack ships. This watch contains less metallic material so that it is not affected or affected by tunnels containing magnetic material.
A Royal Navy Milsub has a few unique identifying features that make it easy to spot if you're lucky enough to find one. These special modifications include:
Rolex Submariner Ref. 5517/5513 Milsub: Military Provenance
5513 and 5517 were distributed to the Army in well identified and documented lots. The serial numbers of these watches are recorded, so it is possible to find one and trace its history, although there is no guarantee of this. The numbers on the back of the case may vary depending on the date of delivery, so it is important to compare the watch with known serial number information to determine authenticity. Additionally, some watches were issued with Mercedes hands and some with 15-minute bezels rather than the 60-minute variety. Some 5517s were issued as dual reference 5513/5517.
Another popular Milsub is the COMEX 5514. These watches are specially made for combat conditions and have seen a lot of hard work. However, the correct worn designation is applied to Rolex 5513 and 5517 issued to the Royal Navy.
Finding a milsub 5513 or 5517 reference is not easy. Because so few of these watches are made, fewer of them are available for sale. You can find one as a result of an estate sale, although collectors tend to carry them to some extent. Keeping the price reasonable on one of these collector's pieces may require patience.
Obtaining the services of a reputable dealer is never more important than when you are considering purchasing a relatively rare Rolex. Additionally, it is generally wise to request documentation from Rolex Geneva or Rolex UK before accepting a Rolex Milsub as "genuine". There are many reliable fakes on the market because they are expensive timepieces, so it is important to do business with a reputable dealer if you want to be sure that your Rolex Millsub is genuine and have proof that the watch is original.
